Premier David Makhura has announced that the families will be assisted with funeral arrangements.
JOHANNEBSURG – Gauteng Premier David Makhura has met with the families of the 14 people who were killed in a collision between a truck and a taxi in Randfontein.
It’s believed the taxi drove into oncoming traffic and collided head on with the truck on the R41 yesterday.
Two people remain in hospital after they sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Makhura has announced that the Randfontein and Mogale City municipalities will assist with funeral arrangements.
He says the families of the deceased are traumatised.
“We are very concerned with the number of accidents that are taking place and in which many people have died on our roads. Many of them are breadwinners and citizens who are contributing meaningfully to our democracy.”
Gauteng traffic police have described the collision in Randfontein as horrific and traumatising adding that officials spent most of yesterday clearing the wreckage.
Spokesperson Obed Sibassa said it’s another reminder for motorists to obey the rules of the road.
“Our moto in Gauteng is that no one must on die our roads.”
Mogale traffic police spokesperson Papi Motaung has also warned taxi drivers to look after their vehicles.
“If anything happen that made the taxi to swerve in front of the truck, if it’s something mechanical, we’d like to urge taxi drivers to actually take good care of their taxis.”
CONDOLENCES
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has sent her condolences to the families of the 14 people killed.
Police have confirmed that 13 people died on the scene while another person later died in a nearby hospital.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and police are now reconstructing the scene to determine the cause of the accident.
The RTMC’s Simon Zwane said the minister has pledged her support for the families of the victims.
“The minister of transport has already sent her condolences to the families of those who have passed away and she is wishing those in hospital a speedy recovery.”
